Jazz singer-songwriter Allegra Levy was recently named one of the top 10 Rising Star jazz vocalists in the 2021 Downbeat Critic's Poll. She released her fourth album on the Steeplechase label, Lose My Number: Allegra Levy sings John McNeil, in 2020 to rave reviews. The album features Levy’s original lyrics set to legendary trumpeter John McNeil’s compositions, played by an all-female, all-star band. It was released in a livestream from the Soapbox Gallery, but (due to the pandemic) this show will be the first-ever live performance of that music with an in-person audience. Based in New York, Levy is known internationally for her prowess as both a gifted singer and scintillating composer of original jazz compositions rooted in the Great American Songbook with a nod to the progressive. She chose to undertake the challenge of creating lyrics for McNeil’s repertoire of often-tricky tunes because he is not only a longtime friend and mentor, but also produced her first two albums – 2014’s Lonely City, hailed by The New York Times as “fresh,” “exotic,” and “far beyond the ordinary,” and 2016’s Cities Between Us, which prompted JazzTimes to pronounce Levy “a double-barreled talent” and “unquestionably one to watch.” The New Yorker magazine recently touted Levy's "gift for sculpting words...and agile vocalizing." A new mom, Levy also proudly serves on the leadership team of WIJO, the Women in Jazz Organization.
