Andy Warhol: A Divine Comedy

  • Soapbox Gallery 636 Dean Street Brooklyn, NY, 11238 United States (map)

Script and Music Design by Eve Wolf
A live reading directed by Donald T. Sanders

The near-death experience of Andy Warhol, after he was shot by Valerie Solanas, is re-imagined à la Dante’s Inferno, with the dramatic flair of a Baroque opera. In a Prologue that takes place in Andy Warhol’s Factory, the senseless shooting of Warhol is re-enacted. Andy, technically dead for one and a half minutes, finds himself in Hell. With Truman Capote as his guide, his “Virgil”, and Shirley Temple as his Beatrice, Andy travels through Nine Circles of Hell, a series of psychological dramas interwoven with an eclectic mix of music: Gesualdo, Monteverdi, The Velvet Underground, Benjamin Britten, Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, John Cage, George Antheil, Arvo Pärt, and Steve Reich. Newly composed music, including recitatives, soundscapes, new set pieces, and arias are envisioned as threading their way through this new singspiel opera.
