Periapsis Music and Dance presents Ipseities, a project created by artistic director Jonathan Howard Katz.
In March 2020, early in the Covid shutdown, Jonathan put out a call to choreographers, offering to write short piano pieces as a way to collaborate during a time of isolation and uncertainty. Over 20 choreographers took him up on the offer, and the collection of piano works that resulted became his Ipseities set. Several of these pieces have been premiered or released through other methods, including dance films, and a number of them were written for choreographers outside of New York. When Jonathan began to collaborate with Brooklyn's Soapbox Gallery on several projects, he decided to present a program of six of these works that were intended for the stage and would work well in the gallery's unique space. Each piece is a specific and often detailed collaboration with the choreographer, with music and movement tailored to the particular collaboration, and the project spans virtually the entire pandemic period to date.
Soapbox Gallery offers the performance through their website as a livestream, and then as an archived video for three days. We are asking you to purchase a virtual ticket at https://periapsismusicanddance.org/ipseities/ to support the artists and the production—you can set your own price!—and then enjoy the livestream. Amounts above $25 will be treated as a tax-deductible donation to Periapsis Music and Dance.
Guest Choreographers: Kyla Barkin, Ashley Carter, Maggie Joy and Erin Maher, Annie Nikunen, Marlaina Garcia Riegelsberger, Rebecca Walden
