David Bertrand Live Streaming from Home

Moving to the United States in 2009 from his native Trinidad & Tobago, flutist/ multi-reedist David Bertrand has steadily and quietly found a space to call his own within the New York jazz community as both a leader and sideman.

A graduate of the MA jazz program of Queens College, he has borrowed from the language of jazz tenor saxophone to create a voice on flute that is valid and relevant within the jazz milieu without losing touch with the instrument’s indelible qualities. Since 2014, his quartet has played original work driven by an interest in organic connections between modern jazz and the Afro-folkloric rhythms and song forms of his Caribbean homeland.

For his inaugural appearance at The Soapbox Gallery, David will gather a few horns from his arsenal and play through a solo set of standards, songs from his Trinidadian heritage and spontaneous improvisations from where the two traditions intersect.
